"Birthin' the Grandbaby"

Hello folks, I hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving. I sure did. You can read more about mine at the blog. Right now, I'm busting at the seams so make yourselves comfortable and let's chat… ~smile~

I didn’t write a real porch chat for this week because I was busy having a baby when I was supposed to be working, I mean a grandbaby, and I didn’t have it actually, my daughter- in-law did, which is how it should be. I read about that woman who had her daughter’s triplets and I think she must be a real stand up type of gal for doing that for her loved ones, but I’m glad I didn’t have to birth my grandbaby. It’s been a couple decades now since I’ve pulled an all-nighter at the hospital waiting on a baby to arrive but I know one thing. It’s a whole lot more fun when you’re not the one doing the heavy lifting.

From start to finish my trusty blackberry and I kept up a running text with the friends and family who couldn’t be there in person, giving them periodic updates on our progress. Why, I even caught myself texting Carey, the laboring mom, with the following exciting message, “We’re at SEVEN centimeters!” I deleted it. I was pretty sure it wouldn’t have come as much of a surprise.

All in all, my son and daughter-in-law did a fantastic job. Throughout the birth, I found myself thinking how such an event could be so unique, so personal, and so individual while echoing the experiences of people everywhere.

For instance, once, as the birth neared, I was standing at Carey’s bedside watching my son watch his laboring wife with a tender, how-can-I help look that made me say, “It hurts you, too, doesn’t it Phillip?” He nodded. “Makes you want to do something, doesn’t it?” Before Phillip could answer, Carey said through gritted teeth, “He’s already done something. That’s why I’m here.”

Carey didn’t laugh. The rest of us couldn’t help it. As you can imagine, I will be telling y’all more about Emerson Ann Tomlinson as the days go by. Suffice to say the sun rises and sets right beside her baby bed. Oh, and just between us, she says I’m her favorite.

Hugs,
Shellie

P.S. I'm not sure how many of y'all got these two bulletins during Thanksgiving, so here's a repost:

My blog is up: http://www.allthingssouthern.com/ShellieTomlinson. Often I want to give y'all a shoutout in between our weekly visits, but I also want to honor my commitment not to barge in your email box more often than you bargained for when you signed up! The blog should help with that. (You can find the link under the homepage pic.)

I'm also making what I expect to be a quality change in our community by trading in the "message board" in favor of an All Things Southern Ning! What's a Ning you might ask. Well, that's a fine question. I wish I could explain it better, but basically, it's a social networking site that is tons more fun than a regular chat room! I plan on emailing everyone who was signed up to the message board with the news. Now, don't be all fussy about the change. It's the new buzz word, right? *grin* You can check out the bells and whistles under the network link beneath the homepage pictures and sign up. But, here-- I'll save you the effort this first time. That link is is under the "network" button beneath the title pics. Now, get to know your neighbors around here. They're a great group.
